The assignment was to design a printed diagram that clearly and understandably conveys the organization and structure of a complex musical composition.
Using the content from a single track, I had to develop a diagram that:
– Clearly presents the sequence and layering (or interaction) of the composition's samples over the entire length of the track.
– Has a ”measurable” visual representation of time.– Identifies samples, phrases or sources that re-occur or are used repeatedly.
– Is built from clearly defined “rules” or systems that you can clearly define during critique.
– Presents the content in an interesting, creative and aesthetic presentation whileremaining functional and usable.
I chose the song No Pause, by the mashup artist Girl Talk. I displayed his composition by tracking the origin of each of each musician he samples.
